Why Quota System in Colleges of Education Has Been Reintroduced

Director General of GTEC, Prof Mohammed Salisu

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has explained the decision to reintroduce the admission quota system at the Colleges of Education in Ghana and. says it is as a result of limited infrastructure.

In a letter dated December 16, 2022, it was announced that the quota system for the 46 accredited Public Colleges of Education was being reintroduced for the 2022/2023 academic year.

According to the GTEC, a total of 12,002 prospective teacher trainees are expected to be admitted into the Colleges of Education for the 2022/2023 academic year.

According to the Director General of the GTEC, Professor Mohammed Salifu, physical spaces at the various Colleges of Education are limited due to the running of the four-year system, hence the move to bring back the quota system and cut down on enrolment.

“We planned a programme of physical infrastructural expansion, but the expansion hasn’t kept pace with the progress of the cohort. So as it stands now, physical space is still a little limited. You would have heard that we have hostel projects going on across all the various colleges. While that is ongoing, we have to manage the space we have. That is what informed the decision,” the Director General of GTEC explained.

GES TO LAUNCH PLC APP

Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will be rolling out a new app called GES PLC App in a bid to improve the implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in basic schools across the country.
The app, which has been developed with the assistance of the Ghana Library Authority, will be introduced in three phases, with the first phase targeting basic schools in the Upper West, Northern, Oti, Bono East, Greater Accra, and Western Regions in January 2023.
To ensure that the app is used effectively, GES will be conducting virtual training sessions for District Training Officers, ICT Coordinators, Deputy Directors of Supervision, School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs), and Basic School Coordinators.
The training sessions, which are scheduled to take place in December 2022, will aim to provide these officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to support the implementation of PLCs in their respective schools.
In a letter addressed to all Regional Directors of Education, the Deputy Director-General of GES, Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, requested that the Metro, Municipal, and District Directors be informed of the training sessions and that the relevant officers be encouraged to fully participate. The letter also stated that the link for the virtual meeting will be shared in due course.
The introduction of the GES PLC App is expected to greatly improve the implementation of PLCs in basic schools, ultimately leading to better learning outcomes for students.
GES is confident that the training sessions will ensure that the app is used to its full potential and will be grateful for the usual cooperation of all Regional Directors of Education in this matter.

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Issues Reminder to Public Universities and Colleges

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a reminder to all public tertiary education institutions in the country to strictly adhere to the approved fees and charges for the 2022/2023 academic year. According to a letter from GTEC, the Parliament of Ghana has approved a maximum 15% increase on fees charged in the 2021/2022 academic year.

However, the commission has received numerous petitions from students and other individuals alleging that some universities are charging fees far in excess of this approved increase. GTEC has warned that any increases above the approved rate will be in direct contravention of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080) and could result in sanctions from the Parliament of Ghana.
In an effort to address financial challenges faced by some students, GTEC has also advised institutions to consider accepting a 50% part-payment of fees to enable students to register at the beginning of the year, with a specific payment plan agreed upon for the balance to be paid based on individual circumstances. This measure is intended to provide flexible terms of payment and reduce the fee-default rate among students with genuine financial difficulties.
